Front garden makeover in Fetcham

Gardening customers Mr and Mrs B from Fetcham asked Marianne in 2017 to makeover their front garden. As it was, the existing garden was a north facing slope with heavy clay soil and partially shaded by a mature beech tree in next door’s garden.

The garden was dark and uninspiring, and they had found it difficult to plant as the soil varied from very dry to very wet. The driveway also had to find space for three to four cars and often a car would need to be parked off the drive, and on the garden instead. All these issues needed to be addressed without any changes to the existing layout of the drive or additional hard landscaping.

Marianne’s answer to these challenges was to create a simple curved border edge that flowed from the existing line of the drive and ran seamlessly down the garden towards the front door. A woodland feel was created with shrubs, ferns and woodland shade loving perennials. Large decorative stones were used within the border for their interesting shapes and textures but also to create raised planting pockets that would keep delicate plant roots out of the damp soil.

Shingle was also used in swathes through the planting and was used to create an area within the planting that could be parked on if necessary. The result is a functional but pretty garden that illuminates a shady spot and still has plenty of interest throughout the year.
Testimonial

Marianne has looked after our garden for over two years and we are really pleased with the results. The lawn is treated, mown and scarified so that it looks green and healthy at all times. Trees and shrubs are pruned to keep them at their best. She is punctual, works in a clean and tidy manner and is excellent value for money.

She also designed and replanted our front garden, which looks stunning, and the plants she chose make sure that it retains its interest throughout the seasons.
